For Kids Grades 1 - 5
Kids entering First Grade in September 2024 can choose between the Kids Reading Program and the Preschool Program; Kids entering Sixth Grade in September 2024 can choose between the Kids Reading Program and the Teen Program.
The Summer Reading Program runs from June 21st through August 11th. Our Summer Reading Celebration will be August 19th.
There are two different ways to earn prizes--by keeping track of your reading, and by completing Reading Challenges!
Logging Books
Record the books you read once school ends. You can log your books by number or by time. We will ask for the Author and Title of the book, even when you're logging by time. When you complete 5 books in your Reading Log, you are eligible to Pick a Prize from the Summer Reading Prize Chest!
Reading Challenges
Check out the Raffle Prizes in our Display Case! These are the Summer Reading Prizes you could win by earning Raffle Tickets for completing Reading Challenges. There are THREE types of Reading Challenges: Genre Challenges, Activity Challenges, and Book Reviews:
Genre Challenges
Genre Book Reviews should start with the Title and Author of the book, and then an answer to the question you were asked about that Genre. It might be a review, it might be about a character, it might be something about why you like that genre. Read the Genre Challenge to know!
Activity Challenges
Activity Challenges will be detailed in the information about the challenge. Usually they will involve reading about something, and then submitting a photo or bringing something TO the Library, or doing something AT the Library.
Book Reviews
Book Reviews should start with the Title and Author of the book, a short summary of the book, and an opinion on how you felt about the book--either your favorite part, or an overall impression. Book Review expectations will be different for first graders than for fifth graders!
For all Challenges:
-Every Challenge entered must be for a different book. Challenges should be taken from books in your Reading Log... take a book in your Log and tell us more about it.
-You must complete a challenge correctly, and a Librarian must approve your review to receive an entry into the drawing.
-Some challenges will be short term--only available for three weeks--while others will go on all summer. For some, you will have to complete a first challenge for the second to appear.
-Check your Challenge Page on your log to see what Challenges are available for you!
Challenges are completely optional.
The Summer Reading Deadline will be on Sunday, August 11th. Your Reading Log and Challenges must all be entered by Midnight. Stay tuned for details on how we will celebrate our summer readers!
