Bone Vol. 6
by Jeff Smith
View in Library Catalog
book cover

What continues to amaze me about Bone is the pacing. How hinted-at elements can come into play and major plot twists can be revealed without them feeling like overly-climactic attention grabbers, how slower more quiet moments don’t feel like filler, and how the two can exist side-by-side seamlessly. I also appreciate how things can happen without the story feeling the need to over explain it. For instance, after her initial depression, Thorn has accepted that she’s a long-lost princess, begins to act like a leader, and remembers her past. A lot of this is barely touched on and often will just happen, no build up or tension or turning points. However, rather than feeling like it comes out of left field, it feels like the story trusts the readers to connect the dots, and like the story and world continue even after the camera has stopped rolling (metaphorically, of course, this is a comic). Now that the main cast (both protagonists and side characters) have all been established, Smith has been delving deeper into their motivations, and the dynamics between characters. He has sort of spent the last few volumes (but especially this one) playing cups and balls with the characters. We don’t necessarily see any new pairings in this volume, but we do see some less used pairings from earlier volumes (such as Phoney and Gran’ma Ben, or Thorn and Smiley). And some of the reveals hint at past relationships which help recontextualize some of the pairings, such as Lucious having a relationship with Gran’ma Ben’s sister changing how we see his earlier interactions with her. This volume certainly feels like “the reveal” volume. Typically a lot of those twists are either at the start (inciting incidents) or 3rd act climaxes, but Smith sticks some fairly big ones right in the middle and it works. Every chapter doesn’t need to end on a cliffhanger in order for me to remain invested and it’s clearly working, because I’ve been more invested in Bone than practically anything I’ve read all summer.

Gotham Academy Vol. 1: Welcome To Gotham Academy

Gotham Academy Vol. 1: Welcome To Gotham Academy is about two girls going to Gotham Academy. It follows Olive showing her ex's (kinda ex) little sister, Maps, around the academy. It is very clearly stated that Olive hates Batman, but not why. Maps and Olive find a cult on school grounds that includes Pom, a kind of mean girl, at night and accidentally burn it down. A ghost is seen around at night from Olive's dorm room window, until it is seen all over. Olive and Pom become friends. Olive sees a cute blond guy while on a steak out trying to see the ghost in the “haunted” building. They get a lock picker (Colton Rivara) to get them into the haunted building. They see a giant hole in the ground, drop a phone in the hole, and while Olive tries to grab it something grabs her arm. Olive helps a dude with a relationship problem. Olive finds secret passages under and in the school, which is where she finds an escaped inmate from Arkham Asylum, Killer Croc. While the gang (Colton, Maps, Olive and Pom) are out at night, they see that the blond dude is a vampire (he says he isn't but he has wings, fangs, and awesome senses). They find Croc again, but Batman scares him off. This book had an interesting plot, good art, and fun characters

Compass South

Compass South is about red headed(trust me, its important) twins Alexander and Cleopatra. When their father goes missing, and Alex gets arrested, they see an ad in the newspaper about missing red headed(see I told you) twins who have been missing for five years. They try to make their way to the Kimberly estate, but see another set of red headed twins who had the same idea to pretend to be the Kimberly twins. Alex and one twin get kidnapped and forced to work on a ship, while Cleo and the other twin continue to go to San Fran. All while a pirate gang is after them for their pocket watch and knife. In the end they meet back up, find their father, and most importantly of all, they find out that their watch and knife are actually a treasure map! This story is set in the eighteen hundreds, which is my favorite time period, and that is why I think I enjoyed this story. It has friendships, romance, adventure, piracy, and mystery.

The Rule Book

I read the rule book by sarah adams. This book was about a sports agent, nora mackenzie and an nfl tight end derek pender.they were in a serious relationship in college and nora abruptly ended it. derek needs a new agent and nora's noss in the email, refered to nora as mac because that is what everyone at work calls her because of her last name. because of this, derek has no clue that his new agent is actually the girl who broke his heart in college. derek was not happy and didn't want nora to be the person representing him. he knew that if he declined nora as his agent though, it would complete reck her newly started career and because he still loved her, he wasn't gonna do that to her. while in vegas for an add compaign, a night of too much drinking happens and when they wake up, they are married with tattooed rings on their fingers. to protect nora's job and dereks legacy, they say that their marriage wasn't a drunken mistake and that they have been in love for a very long time and spending all this time together has stirred up past memories. for publicity purposes for dereks career, they go on their honeymoon but a magazine is going to be covering the honeymoon. With all the time that they spend togther, they fall in love. I would rate this book a 4.5 star book. I just wish that sarah adams would go deeper into detail about what happened between nora and derek while they were in college and she broke up with him. I otherwise really enjoyed this book. I would DEFINITELY read it again.
